JANE POYNTER AND CHRISTINE WOOD

One Place: Two Views

This exhibition takes the form of a photographic dialogue between two artists working with ideas of urban space and placement. For the past few months, Jane and Christine have embarked on numerous exploratory journeys around the streets of their North Melbourne neighbourhood. First scouting out locations of personal significance, the artists then travelled separately to these areas to capture images of the surrounding environment.

‘We both work from home, have family who live in the area, shop locally, and frequent the same dentist, doctor and coffee shops. We avoid leaving our space if possible and we often don’t leave for days on end. And although our paths cross daily, we only meet occasionally by chance and more often by arrangement. For this project we set out to explore our local environment separately to create a personal record and then bring our different views together in a single picture frame.’

Jane and Christine’s different interpretations of the same geographic terrain are presented in One Place: Two Views. This is the beginning of a visual map: a renegade cartography of local space.

Jane Poynter and Christine Wood are both photographers based in North Melbourne. They have been regularly exhibiting for over a decade, and have previously collaborated on several exhibitions.

Hi Jane

Our final prints read for printing!

Christine

Hi Jane

Pleased you liked the “water” images - I think they relate well.

Some more “food for thought” images.  I have tried to relate the colours between the paired images by adding some cross processing and darkening and de-saturating when I thought appropriate.

I think I need to step away now from the images for a while.  I look forward to seeing your thoughts and some new interpretations!

Pairings

Hi Christine

They’re great! I like the first one of the Canning Street (the two things relating to water) and the second of the Laurens Street (street numbers and entrances). Well done! I’ll try some over the weekend down here.

Jane

Here are some additional pairings that I have been playing with today.

Look forward to discussing with you.

Christine, here are the pairs we did today. I’ve burnt a backup disc of all the material, let’s see how we go working on each other’s files. I really like the third Errol Street pair you did. I’ve also put a pdf of them all together on the disc so you can see them all together. Jane

Two new doubles for Abbotsford Street and Canning and Errol Streets re-done from feedback. Looks much better!

We need a Dryburgh Street double now and then repeats on all of them…
